Summer is coming swiftly. Which also means that the mid-year point is approaching. When was the last time you and your team reflected on the targets you set for 2025? Whether there are personal objectives, a year backlog, OKRs or even simple KPI's - there is no excuse to ignore the garden.

Questions to reflect on regarding your 2025 targets and progress thus far.
Are you ready to tend your Target Garden?

Staying with this metaphor, we propose the following reflection questions:

  • Are things blooming as planned?

  • Are there areas that need some watering (small adjustments, internally addressed)?

  • Do any areas have weeds (where more attention is needed)?

  • Do you need some outside help (from some additional support to complete revisions)?

If mid-year is the first time you are reviewing, sooner is better than end of year. If you have been monitoring monthly or quarterly, use this time to have longer reflections. Here are 5 bold moves to make before the end of July, to set yourself off for a stellar second half of 2025.

(1) CELEBRATE

Acknowledge achievements that have happened so far. They can be small, large or anywhere in between. And it doesn't have to just be about work or objectives. Are there personal successes or mindset changes to celebrate?

(2) BE REFLECTIVE

As individuals and as a team, reflect on where you started in January. What progress has been made towards or against the objectives that have been set. As questions to address how best to set yourself up for an even more successful next 6 months.

(3) BE HONEST

There needs to be space to say what is achievable. And this can go both ways, do objectives need to be scaled down or scaled up? Are there an resources changes, unforeseen costs or challenges that popped up - leading to a different environment?

(4) BE BRAVE/BOLD

This one can be difficult, especially when organizations continue to rely on 5 year plans and ambitious targets set in a board room 8 months ago. Sometimes we need to be brave enough to raise a hand for adaption or iteration.

(5) BE FOCUSED

That can all be done, by asking those same questions and more from the start of this post. Make any needed changes to reflect your review process. Revise or refine any objectives and the corresponding KPIs or Key Results and milestones associated with them.

In Europe, as soon as summer holidays start the team could have some ebbs and flows. Try to gather before out of offices start popping up to set the stage. Utilize the months of July and August for 1:1 dialogs and reflections. When everyone is back, you have the fresh slate and adjusted targets to guide you and your team for the following months.
